Day 48: Sehmel Homestead Park…May 15 Grand Opening

Sehmel Homestead Park

The Sehmel Homestead Park gates will open at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at 10123 78th Ave. NW and Sehmel Drive NW in Gig Harbor. The dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony… the public will be invited to join in cutting the “world’s longest ribbon”  taking place from noon to 1 p.m. The following activities will be offered during the day:

  • Harbor Soccer — soccer activities
  • PYFootball— punting and kicking activities / PAA — pitch, hit and run on the ball fields
  • Fox Island tennis — quick-start programs for tots /Peninsula High School — basketball activities and shooting contests
  • Gig Harbor jazz band performance /Arletta Sound performance /Bounce house.

This is an incredible park taking 20 years of planning with 98 acres (most undeveloped) , 20 acres are devoted to football, soccer, baseball and tennis along with meticulously planted gardens, outdoor venues, 3 miles of trails and a huge children’s’ playground suitable for all abilities! The park was funded by $6.5 million PenMet Parks bonds and private and public contributions, including a $100,000 Boeing-Mariners Care Ball Field Grant.

Don’t miss this event. Sehmel is an amazing addition to our Gig Harbor community and will provide a wide-range of opportunities and uses for our members. I, for one, am very excited about this and kids are going to love it! Yet another reason to love Gig Harbor…
